Berau derived from the Kesultanan Berau, founded around the 14th century.
The first king who ruled named Baddit Dipattung with the title Aji Raden Surya Nata Kesuma and wife named Baddit Kurindan with title Aji Permaisuri.
Center of the royal government was originally located on the River Lati (now the location of coal mining PT. Berau Coal).
Raden Aji Suryanata Kesuma run his administration in 1400-1432 with a fair and wise, so that the welfare of his subjects increase. At that time he managed to unite the community residential Berau area called Banua, which Banua Merancang, Banua Pantai, Banua Kuran, Banua Rantau Buyut dan Banua Rantau Sewakung.
In addition to the authority, the position of Prince Aji Suryanata Kesuma also very influential, made him a respected opponent and friend.
To commemorate the services of the first King of Berau, the Government has perpetuate as the name of Korem 091 Aji Raden Surya Nata Kesuma as Rayon Militer Kodam VI/TPR.
After Aji Raden Suryanata Kesuma death, the Government of the Sultanate of Berau and later continued by his son for generations his descendants ruled until around the 17th century.
Then came the beginning of the eighteenth century the Dutch entered the Berau kingdom under the guise of merchants (VOC). But the political activities carried out by De Vide et impera. Dutch managed to divide the kingdom of Berau, so the kingdom split into two, namely the Kesultanan Sambaliung & Kesultanan Gunung Tabur.
Berau Regency (Kabupaten Berau) is one of the ten regencies in East Kalimantan province in Indonesia. East Kalimantan (Kalimantan Timur) is one of the islands in Borneo. It has an area of 34,127.47 km² and a population of 179,444 at the 2010 Census.
